Transfer and edit files with SFTP
Browse local and remote files side by side, transfer and resume, change permissions and edit remote files.
Open the file browser#
Open Files in the sidebar, or choose Browse files in a host's right-click menu. The file browser shows your computer on one side and the server on the other, with permissions, sizes and modification times. It uses the same connection as your terminals to that host, so no second sign-in is needed.
Under Settings → General → File browser you can show hidden files, such as .ssh or .config, and choose whether Ravelon asks before deleting files on a server. Files deleted over SFTP do not go to a trash.
Transfers#
Select files or folders and use Upload or Download. Three files transfer at the same time, and every copy keeps the modification time of the source.
If a file or folder already exists at the target, Ravelon asks once:
- Overwrite: replace the existing files.
- Resume: continue shorter files where they end and skip complete ones. Use this to finish an interrupted transfer.
- Skip existing: leave existing files as they are.
The answer applies to everything in that transfer. If a file appears at the target after you started, that file stops with a message instead of being replaced.
Permissions#
Permissions changes read, write and execute bits for the selection, or takes an octal value such as 0640.
Edit remote files#
- Edit selected file opens a remote text file of up to 1 MiB right in Ravelon.
- Open in another program downloads the file, opens it with the program your system uses for that type and uploads it again every time you save. Scripts and unknown types open as text so they are never run, and programs and installers are refused. You stop editing from the transfer list.
Locking or switching the vault also stops editing.
