Connect via SSH

Sign-in methods, jump hosts, proxies, host key trust, quick connect and running one command on several hosts.

Connect#

Click a host on the Hosts page, use its right-click menu, drag it from the Connections panel into the Workspace, or find it with ⌘K on macOS or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux. In the host search, the arrow keys move the highlight and Enter connects the highlighted host. If you type an address such as admin@10.0.0.5, Enter connects to exactly that address without saving a host.

Terminals, the file browser and tunnels to the same host share one connection and one sign-in.

Sign-in methods#

Under Authentication in the host editor, choose a Saved credential to reuse one identity across many hosts, or pick a method for this host: Ask each time, Password, Private key or SSH agent. For a private key you can add a certificate file and the key passphrase. Servers that ask several questions, including one-time codes, are supported: Ravelon shows the prompts in a dialog.

Jump hosts and proxies#

Under Connect through you pick a saved SSH host as jump host. Chains can be up to four hops deep. When a jump host asks for its own password or second factor, the dialog names that jump host, and the answer goes only to it. Under Proxy you can send the connection through a SOCKS5 or HTTP CONNECT proxy or a proxy command. Proxies that ask for a password are not supported yet.

For old switches and appliances, Advanced → Also allow older algorithms adds older key exchange, cipher and MAC algorithms for that host only. Forward SSH agent is off unless you turn it on per host.

Host keys#

On the first connection Ravelon shows the server's key type and SHA-256 fingerprint. Compare it with the fingerprint on the server, for example:

sh
ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub

When you trust it, exactly this key is saved and checked on every later connection. Each jump host is checked against its own saved key. If a key changes, a clearly different warning appears.

Important: An unknown host key cannot be allowed just once. Only trust a key you have verified.

When a session ends#

An ended SSH pane stays linked to its host. Press Enter or click Reconnect to connect again, or choose Local shell in the pane header.

One command on several hosts#

Select hosts on the Hosts page and choose Run command…. After a confirmation Ravelon runs the command on each selected SSH host, up to four at a time, and lists exit codes and output.
